PSHE & RSE

There has never been a more important time than now for children to develop an awareness of self; empathy and respect for others; to know what is good and bad for their emotional and mental health and to become adept at expressing themselves.  Children need attributes such as resilience, risk-management, teamwork and critical thinking to live fulfilling lives in modern Britain.  We At Broke Hall promote these attributes holistically through our shared ethos and by following a comprehensive programme of PSHE study called Jigsaw.  Every class will study the same unit (puzzle piece) at the same point in the year, at a level appropriate to their age group.  This provides continuity and progression across the school and ensures the curriculum is thoroughly covered.  In line with the Department for Education mandate for compulsory Relationships and Sex Education, Jigsaw covers the statutory content in a clear but sensitive and age-appropriate way.  There is no right to withdraw from Relationships or Health Education.

Jigsaw – Intent – Why are we teaching this?

At Broke Hall it is the intent that the curriculum, planning, teaching and assessment of PSHE provides high quality education to enable pupils to build knowledge & skills through the language of learning. The PSHE curriculum enables all pupils, including vulnerable groups, to acquire knowledge they need to succeed.

The Jigsaw PSHE programme holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 allows us to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Underpinning the intent are 6 key concepts:

  • Being Me In My World - includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising learning charters.
  • Celebrating Differences - includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included), and diversity work.
  • Dreams and Goals - includes goal setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.
  • Healthy Me - includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Relationships - includes understanding friendships, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • Changing Me - this puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change (includes age-appropriate sex education)

Jigsaw – Implementation – How is this being taught in the classroom?

Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

Each PSHE lesson is underpinned by the following 6-part lesson structure:

Connect Us - developing the ability to take enjoyment from their learning, to be inclusive learners and to build and maximise social skills, children are encouraged to build positive relationships and take part in collaborative learning.

Calm Me - children gain awareness of the activity in their mind, relaxing them and quietening their thoughts and emotions to a place of optimum learning capacity.

Open My Mind - developing the ability to filer the many stimuli entering the child's mind at any given time. The aim here is to improve concentration and learning by filtering out activity around them.

Tell Me or Show Me - children are encouraged to introduce new information, concepts and skills, using a range of approaches and activities.

Let Me Learn - developing children's ability to manipulate, use and play with new information in order for it to make sense to them and for them to 'accommodate' it in their existing learning.

Help Me Reflect - children are encouraged to reflect on their learning experiences and their progress. By reflecting, children can process and evaluate what they have learnt, which enables them to consolidate and apply their learning.

Jigsaw – Impact – What is the effect of this teaching?

The impact of the PSHE teaching following the Jigsaw programme at Broke Hall is evident in school life as a whole – in the behaviours and attitudes of the pupils, and the relationships they have with each other.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In addition to the Jigsaw curriculum, children in nursery and reception are supported in their personal, social and emotional development (PSED) through the CUSP Early Years Curriculum.
