Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language.

In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners, we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them.

At Broke Hall, we use the Voice 21 framework to support our teaching of oracy. We use the four key strands within the core and foundation subjects as well as in stand-alone oracy sessions.  

Discussion roles

When carefully planned and executed, discussion is a powerful tool for learning. During a discussion, students are actively involved in the development of their own knowledge and must constantly re-evaluate their position in relation to others. To scaffold these discussions, we use different 'talking tactics' to encourage children to think strategically about their contributions to the group talk. 

Sentence stems

Sentence stems help to develop the quality and structure of discussions, they encourage student participation, promote better articulacy and critical thinking skills.
