Rights Respecting School

Over the last couple of years, Broke Hall has been working towards UNICEF’s prestigious Rights Respecting School Award.  In July 2023, we successfully gained bronze status and in June 2024 we were awarded silver status. We are currently in pursuit of gold.

A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children, and young people to respect the rights of others in school. Silver is given to schools that make excellent progress towards embedding the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into its ethos and curriculum.

The CRC is based on an analysis of what children need to thrive. These needs can be grouped into four categories:

  • to survive as a fit and healthy person
  • to be protected from harm and abuse
  • to develop physically, mentally and socially
  • to participate as an active citizen

Altogether, there are 54 rights.  Articles 1 - 42 apply directly to children.  Articles 43 – 54 relate to how adults and governments work together to support and promote children’s rights.
